The Division of Vascular Surgery offers a five year vascular surgery residency program, with one position available each year.  Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is affiliated with two 600-bed private hospitals, St. John’s Hospital and Memorial Medical Center, that are separated by three-quarters of a mile. The operative caseload is varied, covering virtually every aspect of peripheral vascular surgery, but is weighed toward open and endovascular management of carotid stenosis, aortic aneurysms, and lower extremity arterial occlusive disease. Vascular surgery residents will participate in structured learning experiences including a “boot camp” to master basic surgical skills such as knot tying, suturing, central line placement, anastomotic techniques, chest tube insertion, surgical airway placement and laparoscopic skills.  Core surgical rotations are concentrated in the first three years of the residency in conjunction with the Division of General Surgery.

The two year fellowship program allows trainees who have completed general surgery training to become vascular surgery specialist who are fully competent in the range of vascular diseases and treatment modalities. Having mastered the surgical care principles already, these two years provide focused management of vascular patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Program graduates will be competent in open and endovascular procedures as well as medical management as they apply to cerebral vascular, carotid, visceral, and extremity arterial and venous disease. The ultimate goal is to facilitate vascular residents throughout their training in becoming competent, compassionate and effective vascular surgeons, who support the health care system within which they work and who strive to continue self-education throughout their career.

The Vascular Surgery integrated program allows medical students to pursue a career in vascular surgery after completion of medical school.  During the five clinical years of training, the majority of the first three years are dedicated to mastering core surgical principles (8 months of core surgery rotations, 4 months of vascular rotations), while the last two years are dedicated to mastering vascular surgery. Thirty-six months over the five years are dedicated specifically to vascular surgery training.

The University of Cincinnati training programs are targeted toward successful graduates and residents of an accredited medical or osteopathic school who wish to specialize in the field of vascular surgery. The curriculum stresses core education in the management of surgical patients with complex illnesses, and advanced education to develop competency in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with vascular disease. Residents and fellows are well prepared for the RPVI examination through intensive training from our non-invasive vascular laboratory course, which is intended specifically to augment the knowledge and skills expected of a vascular surgeon through vascular imaging and other techniques. Our programs offer a distinct opportunity to become facile in both standard open surgical procedures, catheter-directed therapy for the treatment of vascular disease, as well as non-invasive vascular diagnostic laboratory training. Experience in outpatient venous interventions, dialysis access, and exposure to private practice vascular surgery completes the training, making the residents and fellows quite marketable in both academic and private practice employment opportunities.  The UC division of Vascular Surgery was one of the first academic vascular practices in this country to develop a formal program in endovascular surgery and remains a recognized leader in the clinical applications of this rapidly evolving field.

The Vascular Surgery residency program was established in 1998 by Dr. Irving L. Kron and is recognized as one of the top clinical residency programs in the country. Our current vascular surgery program director is Dr. Kenneth J. Cherry and the associate program director is Dr. Gib Upchurch. The vascular surgery residency program is two continuous years (2) of clinical training in adult vascular and endovascular surgery. All of the vascular surgery training is based at the University of Virginia Medical Center. At the completion of clinical training, residents are eligible for certification by the American Board of Surgery with specialty in Vascular Surgery.

The program spans the continuum of care from pre operative assessment, plan, and execution of operation, critical care management, post operative recovery, and post surgical follow up evaluation. Residents are exposed to a variety of surgical and endovascular surgical treatments- from standard to new and innovative. The primary focus of our program is to produce vascular surgery surgeons that are competitive for both academic and private practice positions at the completion of their training. As a tertiary medical center, the vascular surgery service receives a high volume of diverse and complex cases ( open and endovascular)  which provides excellent clinical experiences for the residents to learn. The depth and variety of clinical volume precludes any time for laboratory research, though clinical projects, papers, and presentations are strongly encouraged.  We have scheduled dedicated time during the residency program in the vascular lab for reading and image education. We offer two (2) RRC-approved positions a year in the vascular surgery program.

5-2 Residency Program - The UPMC Division of Vascular Surgery has had a successful two-year fellowship program in vascular surgery since 2001 and realized a major accomplishment in being named one of a few sites in the country to secure ACGME accreditation for a five-year vascular surgery residency program beginning in 2007, and the only site to be given two slots.

Integrated 0-5 Residency Program - The five-year residency program is one of two new training paradigms approved by the ACGME that leads to certification in vascular surgery. We were granted two slots for the program and our first two residents started in July 2007. The program is designed to shorten the overall duration of training and to provide more concentrated time to include the evolving new techniques within vascular surgery.
