Fellows Benefit from Complimentary Attendance at SVS Coding Course

The SVS offered 12 second-year fellows complimentary registration for the March 4 Coding Course, held  in Washington, D.C. To be eligible to apply for complimentary registration, trainees had to be SVS Candidate Members and in the last year of fellowship.

Based on prior inquiry and interest from vascular trainees, SVS began offering complimentary registration in the fall of 2010. The March course was the second consecutive course where fellows were offered this opportunity, and a total of 23 fellows have benefitted.

Keith Menes, MD, a second-year fellow at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, said attending the coding course will help him in his future practice. “I can see the broad changes in terms of necessary documentation and P4P that will allow me to set up my future practice so that I can meet the necessary documentation requirements, especially during audits,” Dr. Menes said.

Walaya Methodius-Rayford, MD, a second-year fellow at Atlanta Medical Center, said the coding course helped clear up some misconceptions she had about coding. “I did not realize how much the information changed and how often,” she said. “Although the practice I am joining has a good coding and billing department, I can start with a good idea of how to code for myself and can also add some input in areas where some lack maybe.”

Dr. Methodius-Rayford added, “this is a once in a lifetime event for a fellow. This will only expand your knowledge base for your first year of practice.”
