The SVS Women’s Issues Committee will present its second SVS Women and Diversity Leadership Retreat, Oct. 22 – 24, 2009 at the Viking Hotel in Newport, R.I. This year’s retreat addresses the unique situations women and those from diverse cultures face in the field of vascular surgery. It will include discussion about the shift in values of both female and male medical students toward career choices that allow active participation in family and community life.
“Medicine is recognizing there needs to be a more diverse workforce and there are differences in the experiences of women and those from different ethnic backgrounds in all fields. Vascular surgery is a prime example with only 5 percent of SVS membership being women. This discussion is very important to the future of vascular surgery and the SVS. The Women’s Issues Committee is pleased to be at the forefront of the conversation,” said Cynthia Shortell, MD, chair, SVS Women’s Issues Committee.
