Several SVS members recently made presentations and attended career fairs to raise the specialty’s awareness and to encourage medical students to explore vascular surgery as a career choice.
One of the presenters, Dr. Heron E. Rodriguez talked to students on January 22, 2009 at the University of Illinois at Chicago,
College of Medicine’s National Network of Latin American Medical Students-La Raza Medical Association’s meeting were impressed with the specialty’s broadness and expressed gratitude for learning more about possible career opportunities within vascular surgery.
“It was great to speak with the LaRaMa medical students about vascular surgery early in their careers. The students easily made the connection of how prevalent vascular disease is in the Hispanic community and how helpful would it be for this community to have access to vascular surgeons that speak their language and understand the unique circumstances of their culture," said Dr. Rodriguez. "These presentations are extremely helpful for medical students as they begin to explore career choices as part of their professional development.”
