The American Vascular Association established a resident research fund to honor the exemplary career of Dr. Robert Hobson. His colleagues, the New Jersey Medical School Vascular Alumni Society (UMDNJ), have initiated the fund to endow the AVA Resident Research Prize, a $5,000 award presented annually to an outstanding vascular or general surgery resident. A principal of $100,000 is required to support this award.
"Bob Hobson developed an enormous number of personal and professional relationships during his remarkable career," said Frank Padberg, M.D., professor of vascular surgery, New Jersey Medical School, UMDNJ. "His encouragement influenced both trainees and faculty to practice surgery with appropriate indications, to seek optimal clinical outcomes, and to pursue meaningful investigations in vascular and especially cerebrovascular disease. There is no better way to honor his memory."
Hobson was a leading protagonist for several landmark clinical trials. After soliciting and negotiating funding, he provided the necessary clinical leadership to bring these investigations to meaningful conclusions. He placed great emphasis on evidence-based education. For example, vascular practice in the 1980s was predominantly based upon retrospective data; mature vascular surgeons will recall the active debate questioning the role of surgical intervention for high-grade carotid stenosis. He served as principal investigator on the VA Cooperative trial on Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis; this randomized, controlled trial provided the first convincing data defining the benefits of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) in this setting. These findings were generalized to a broader population with the Asymptomatic Carotid Artery Stenosis (ACAS) trial. Subsequent advances in technology prompted him to organize a comparison of Carotid Angioplasty and Stenting versus CEA as principal investigator of the ongoing CREST trial. His legacy to the vascular surgical community is obvious in these contributions defining the role one of our most common surgical interventions. AVA is promoting this award in order to stimulate future vascular specialists to emulate this extraordinary clinical scientist.
