New Vascular Surgery Training Programs

The ACGME approved new training paradigms that lead to certification in vascular surgery only. To date, three new five-year integrated programs, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, University of Michigan Medical Center, and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, have been approved and are listed on www.VascularWeb.org in the Residents, Fellows and Students section. As new programs are approved, they will be added to the Web site.

The new paradigms shorten the overall duration of training and provide more concentrated time to include the evolving new techniques within vascular surgery. The first is a five-year integrated program of which three years are devoted to vascular surgery and two years are devoted to core surgical training.

The second is a six-year program that consists of three years vascular surgery training following three initial years of preliminary general surgery training in the same institution. In addition to these new possibilities, trainees may continue to pursue both general and vascular surgery training in the current sequential programs.

Free DVD Showcasing Vascular Surgery Specialty and Career Opportunities

Last spring the SVS Communications Committee developed a new DVD/brochure package to introduce students and residents to the field of vascular surgery.

This free DVD features several SVS members discussing why this is the most dynamic field and the unlimited potential available in vascular surgery. The DVD, entitled Vascular Surgery - On the Cutting Edge of Your Career, is divided into four sections: Why Vascular Surgery; Your Family, Patients, Career; Research Opportunities; and Vascular Training Opportunities.

Student and Resident E-newsletter Free Subscription

SVS offers free subscriptions to On the Cutting Edge, an e-newsletter reporting new training programs, up-to-date vascular research, and other vascular-related information for students and residents.

Members are encouraged to subscribe to the e-newsletter and forward copies to interested students and residents, as well send the e-mail address of students and residents to communications@vascularsociety.org to be included in the e-newsletter distribution list.
