Career Resources for Residents and Medical Students

The SVS is actively recruiting medical students and general surgery residents into the specialty of vascular surgery. The strategy includes a special networking section, a mentoring program, podcasts, and on-line communication tools. Please consider becoming a mentor and telling students and residents about these opportunities described below. For more information email SVS at communications@vascularsociety.org.

Networking Sections

Medical students and general surgery residents now have direct access to valuable career resources by joining the SVS Medical Student Section or the SVS General Surgery Resident Section. These Sections serve as a platform for medical students and general surgery residents to network with similarly interested students and residents. Medical Student and General Surgery Resident Section Members receive numerous benefits such as various SVS e-communications, the Resident/Student e-newsletter: On the Cutting Edge, the SVS Pulse, access to the online edition of VASCULAR SPECIALIST, and monthly podcasts on vascular surgery topics. For more on these newly created Sections, visit www.VascularWeb.org in the Residents and Medical Students section.

Online Mentor Match-up Service

SVS launched a new, online Mentor Match-up feature to match medical students and residents with vascular surgeon mentors. The goal is to establish an online mechanism for medical students and residents to obtain guidance and coaching through a mentor relationship. Mentees will choose criteria such as location and gender to find a list of mentors matching their selections. Medical students and general surgery residents can search for a mentor by visiting the Mentor Match-up feature on www.VascularWeb.org in the Residents and Medical Students section.

SVS needs more vascular surgeons to become mentors. Medical students and general surgery residents who have attended the Vascular Annual Meeting have said a mentor was the most influential aspect in their career decision-making. If you are interested in serving as a mentor visit the Mentor Match-up feature on www.VascularWeb.org in the Residents and Medical Students section and complete a brief interest form.

Educational Podcasts

SVS recently posted podcasts on vascular surgery educational topics for medical students and residents on iTunes in the Science & Medicine section and on www.VascularWeb.org in the Residents and Medical Students section. This innagural podcast is first in a series of addressing a broad scope of vascular surgery topics and career opportunities. The most recent podcast features vascular surgeons discussing how they perform open surgical, endovascular and minimally invasive procedures to treat acute and chronic arterial and venous diseases. SVS will introduce a new podcast each month. If you know a medical student or general surgery resident interested in vascular surgery, please encourage them to download these free podcasts.

The SVS Resident and Student Recruitment campaign is supported by a grant from W.L. Gore & Associates Inc.
