George Louridas, M.D., a world-renowned vascular surgeon and an associate editor for VASCULAR SPECIALIST, died this April after a long bout with cancer. Dr. Louridas was a native of South Africa where he established and headed the first vascular unit and vascular laboratory at the Johannesburg Hospital. He accepted an appointment at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, in 1998 and quickly became associate professor of surgery and head of vascular surgery at St. Boniface General Hospital, Health Sciences Centre, and the University of Manitoba. Dr. Louridas was 53 years old at the time of his death and was at the height of a career as physician, researcher, and award-winning educator. Among his many achievements were development of the Winnipeg Vascular Symposium and the Vascular Health Program, the latter one of the first such programs initiated in Canada. Dr. Louridas was a founding member of the editorial advisory board for this newspaper. He is survived by his wife and children and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.
