On June 11-12, 2006, the American Vascular Association (AVA) provided free vascular screenings to the AMA House of Delegates representatives and their guests. The screenings served as an educational initiative to raise vascular disease awareness among physicians, as well as ease the detection of what is often referred to as a silent killer.
By participating in the AVA screening as patients, the AMA physicians were given the opportunity to experience, first-hand, what tests should be performed on their own patients who are at-risk, as well as the simplicity and accuracy of the screening exams.
This comprehensive screening consisted of a carotid artery ultrasound used to detect carotid artery disease, an aortic ultrasound for the detection of aneurysms and an ankle brachial index to detect peripheral arterial disease.
Thank you to Chicago-area vascular technologists Patricia Astleford, Donna Blackburn, Karen Burns, Eileen French-Sherry and Mary Michelini who helped conduct the exams, as well as SVS members Drs. Carlo Dall'Olmo, Bill Flinn and Mark Morasch who were on hand to discuss the screening results with participants.
The event was very well received with over 160 AMA physicians attending during the event.
