Clinical Trials in Vascular Disease: Getting Answers That Matter

April 10 - 11, 2008
Renaissance Washington, DC Hotel
Washington, DC

Program Overview

This program will address unanswered questions in the management of lower extremity arterial and carotid occlusive disease and how to get answers through a clinical trial.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

Session I:

  1. Understand the present state of therapy for superficial femoral artery (SFA) and popliteal disease.
  2. Evaluate the current success and failure of clinical trials in SFA and popliteal disease.
  3. Determine the current clinical questions that need to be answered through clinical trials in SFA and popliteal disease.
  4. Define the optimal parameters that should be applied during the development and implementation of any new clinical trial.

Session II:

  1. Discuss the current and future trends in management of patients with critical limb ischemia.
  2. Critically assess current studies and determine needs for future trials in patients with critical limb ischemia.

Session III:

  1. Identify three potential pharmacological agents useful in limb salvage.
  2. Identify two gene targets recently evaluated in the treatment of critical limb ischemia.
  3. List two recent clinical trials evaluating cell therapy for limb salvage.
  4. List two unconventional methods for treating critically ischemic limbs.
  5. Identify two indications for primary amputation in treating patients with unreconstructable vascular disease.

Session IV:

  1. Understand the distinct interests of the NIH, FDA, CMS and VA with regard to best available data to guide peripheral arterial disease management.
  2. Understand how these distinct interests affect their willingness to support the acquisition of such data.

Session V:

  1. Review pertinent clinical evidence of carotid artery stenting (CAS).
  2. Determine appropriate therapeutic options for patients with carotid artery stenosis.
  3. Determine appropriate endpoints for upcoming CAS trials

Session VI:

  1. Understand the factors contributing to the slower than anticipated growth of carotid stenting as they are related to: (a) patient selection, (b) lesion selection, (c) current technology shortcomings, and (d) operator training and economic considerations.
  2. Review the progress made on the technology, techniques, and training related to carotid stenting.
  3. Apply the results of clinical trials to the management of their patients.

Who Should Attend?

The Research Initiatives in Vascular Disease Conference brings together vascular surgeons, vascular medicine physicians, vascular interventionalists, cardiologists, basic scientists, and clinical scientists from other disciplines to facilitate research in vascular disease through an exchange of information and ideas.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) Credit

The Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The SVS designates this educational activity for a maximum of 9.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
