Guidant to set up panel on implantable devices

Last Updated: 2005-06-23 10:00:32 -0400 (Reuters Health)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cardiovascular device company Guidant Corp. said on Wednesday it planned to create an independent panel to devise guidelines about when to give information to doctors and patients about risks related to implantable medical devices.

"Recent issues with some of our devices have highlighted the need for clear guidelines for communication about infrequently occurring events," Guidant President and Chief Executive Ronald Dollens said in a statement.

Guidant, which has agreed to be acquired by Johnson & Johnson, recently said that two reported deaths have been linked to some of its implantable heart defibrillators and it is recalling those and some similar models from the market.
