Health Policy And Government Relations

The United States Congress and federal regulatory agencies, such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), make many critical decisions on issues that have an impact upon vascular surgeons and their patients.

SVS Advocacy

The Society for Vascular Surgery staff includes a Director of Health Policy and Government Relations to handle important issues on a daily basis.

The SVS Clinical Practice Council is also involved in helping SVS influence health care policymaking through advocacy activities.

In addition, SVS is involved with Regulatory Issues by providing comments on proposed rules and meeting with officials at CMS, FDA and other regulatory agencies to discuss issues such as the physician fee schedule, carotid stent coverage and P4P.

Contact your members of Congress

If you do not know who represents you in Congress, visit the Take Legislative Action! section to obtain this information. Sample letters are provided that can be emailed or faxed to your U.S Representative and two Senators. 

Attend Political Fundraisers

Another effective way to be proactive in Washington is to attend political fundraisers for members of Congress who are on committees of jurisdiction for health care issues – House Energy and Commerce and Ways and Means and Senate Finance. This allows one-on-one conversations on priority SVS legislative issues with members of Congress and their staffs. These events require contributions from the SVS Political Action Committee (PAC) in order to attend.
