Mission Statement:  The mission of the Lower Extremity Training committee is to assist qualified vascular surgeons obtain training, preceptorships, and mentoring in the performance of aortoiliac and infrainguinal interventions and minimally invasive approaches to  peripheral vascular disease and adapt to new technology.  This program will provide hands-on interventions.

This committee will design, implement, and oversee a program for vascular surgeons to obtain hands-on interventions and achieve qualifications for privileges at their respective institutions.

By formalizing this process, we have the opportunity to maintain the highest standards of care for patients with peripheral vascular disease by ensuring that well qualified vascular surgeons pursue a rigorous course of training in lower extremity interventions leading to the achievement of specific training goals.

Lower Extremity Training Program Process

The committee will:

  • Identify and interact with institutions where SVS sponsored hands-on lower extremity PVD training may be performed by vascular surgeons.
  • Establish qualifications required for vascular surgeons to participate in SVS sponsored hands on training programs. (see: Lower Extremity Training Program Application application  for more information)
  • Vet applications from vascular surgeons who desire to participate in hands-on lower extremity PVD training  (with assistance of CME provider).
  • Review the criteria for lower extremity PVD privileges in the home institution of each participating vascular surgeon.
  • Interact with the credentialing body of the participant’s home institution as needed.
  • Provide information about lower extremity PVD interventional privileges (from SVS and other national sources) to credentialing body of participant’s home institution as needed.
  • Assist in arranging hands-on training at approved site.
  • Monitor the results of the lower extremity PVD training with the site director.
  • Committee will determine (after close consultation with site director) when participant has satisfactorily completed lower extremity PVD training,  the case number participant must reach as required by home institution, but in some cases may exceed it.
  • Committee reserves the right to terminate training.  Acceptance into the program is not a guarantee of completion of the program or of obtaining lower extremity PVD interventional  privileges.
  • Upon satisfactory completion of the lower extremity PVD training, the committee will issue a certificate of completion upon behalf of the SVS.
  • After lower extremity PVD training is complete, the committee will provide a designated mentor to the trainee who would be available to review cases and to proctor the surgeons in their home institutions for cases if needed.

The Lower Extremity Training Program is supported by an educational grant from ev3.
