Dear Friends and Colleagues:

This year the American Vascular Association/Lifeline Foundation celebrates its 20th anniversary. In 1986 a group of forward-thinking vascular surgeons assembled in New Orleans to chart the course of a Foundation dedicated to supporting the research of young vascular surgeons. The Foundation was initially named the Society for Vascular Surgery Foundation for Education and Research.

As Dr. Allan Callow describes, “understanding the basic biologic process of atherosclerosis obliterans and the education of other vascular surgeons in the process of this disease” was the goal of the Foundation.

Today, the mission of our Foundation remains the same to reduce death and disability from vascular disease through education and research.

Over the years our Foundation has been successful in supporting the research work of young vascular surgeons, the establishment of surgical registries, and the development of national screening programs. These efforts have helped maintain our leadership in the treatment of patients with vascular disease.

As priorities have shifted at the National Institutes of Health, it has become more difficult for young vascular surgeons to obtain funding. To maintain the momentum developed by the Foundation it is important that we continue to be generous in the support of basic and clinical research studies.

I hope this year you will come forward to support the Foundation and its important mission. It is only through your support that we can maintain the K08 basic science program and the K23 clinical research programs. The Foundation has traditionally supported the work of young researchers which is the future of our society and our profession.

Sincerely,

William H. Pearce,M.D.
