Presidential Welcome

Welcome to the official Pacific Northwest Vascular Surgery Society website! As current President of the PNWVS, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the society. Looking back, I presented at the annual PNWVS meeting for the first time over a decade ago in November 2004. The title of my presentation was “Totally Percutaneous Aneurysm Repair.” I was grateful then to be sponsored by my friend and PNWVS 1997 President Charles Andersen, MD, from Madigan Army Medical Center. PNWVS is an incorporated non-profit organization founded in 1986 when Toshio Inahara, MD was assisted by the first program chair Kaj Johansen, MD to develop a platform for new vascular research. It has since grown to a thriving society with membership now numbering over 150. Over the years, I have enjoyed society membership as a way of presenting research, mentoring residents and building rapport with experts at other institutions in the region.

In 2003, while in Iraq, my surgical team made 60 missions to the Azady hospital to assist Iraqi surgeons with everything from managing trauma wounds to pediatric surgery to cancer. I learned the incredible fact that although war can separate two countries, medicine and caring for people can join them together. In the Pacific Northwest, we have a great opportunity each year to come together and share new ideas. With leading vascular surgeons from both USA and Canada, the Pacific Northwest Vascular Society brings vascular experts from two countries together to collaborate in surgical education and innovation.

The focus of Pacific Northwest Vascular Society for 2015 is dedicated to the growth and stability that will lead us to our vision of becoming the pre-eminent regional scientific meeting for the Pacific Northwest. I encourage you to be an active member of the PNWVS and engage with this exciting organization that will enhance your knowledge, professional growth, as well as improve your patient outcomes. Please join us for the 2015 Pacific Northwest Vascular Society Annual Meeting held at the Renaissance Seattle Hotel October 1-2, 2015. This meeting is a great way to network with other surgeons, discover new industry innovations, and attend leading edge vascular scientific sessions to collect CME credits.

Sincerely,

Benjamin W. Starnes, MD

Division of Vascular Surgery

Pacific Northwest Vascular Society is one of only a few “Regional” vascular societies in America. It brings together physicians interested in vascular disease from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia, Canada.

The objectives of this Society are:

  • To contribute to the understanding of peripheral vascular diseases.
  • To promote the professional development of specialists in vascular disease.
  • To maintain high standards in caring for the patient with vascular disease.
  • To provide a forum for the presentation of scientific information and the proposal of theories concerning vascular diseases.
  • Join us in Seattle for an exceptional educational experience at the 2015 Pacific Northwest Vascular Society Annual Meeting.
