 2014 Annual Meeting

Dear Members and Colleagues:

On behalf of the Executive Council of the Midwestern Vascular Surgical Society, the Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of Iowa is pleased to welcome you to Iowa for the 38th Annual Meeting of the Society from September 4-6, 2014.

We are very excited to host this “first ever” meeting of the MVSS in the state of Iowa.  The Iowa City/Coralville area is the home of a vibrant Big 10 college community in a pastoral setting (yes there are plenty of cornfields nearby) on the banks of the Iowa River.  In case any of you think you have arrived  in “heaven” this year does coincide with the 25th anniversary of the filming of the “Field of Dreams” about 70 miles from here.   The University of Iowa was the original developer of the Master of Fine Arts degree and is the home of the world-renowned Iowa Writer’s Workshop.  It is fitting that the MVSS will inaugurate our first woman president (Melina Kibbe) at a meeting in Iowa City as the University of Iowa was the first public institution in the country to admit men and women on an equal basis in 1855 as well as graduating the first woman from law school in 1873.
The meeting will be held in the Iowa City “suburb” of Coralville at the Marriott Hotel located at the Iowa River Landing which in addition to the conference center and a new University of Iowa Health Care outpatient facility has a number of adjacent dining options.

The Friday night reception will be held at the “Old Capitol” on the main campus of the University of Iowa.  The building is a U.S. National Historic Landmark and served as the Capitol of the State of Iowa from the beginning of statehood in 1846 until 1857.  The Old Capitol with its gold dome is the signature building and centerpiece of the University of Iowa campus.   It currently houses a historical museum.
It will be a football weekend in Iowa City and the University of Iowa will be hosting Ball State.  We had considered obtaining a bloc of tickets for the MVSS but because the Saturday game time (likely either 11 am or 1pm) is unknown at this time and interested individuals can likely obtain better quality seats at a similar or lower cost on their own we would suggest you go to if you want to purchase tickets in advance.  Game day tickets will almost certainly also be available.
Please make your plans to attend now.  If you have any questions about the meeting or plans for activities, please contact us directly at (319) 356-8242 or contact Terri Comegys at the Society’s Administrative Offices at (978) 745-8331.  We look forward to welcoming you to Iowa.
