Program Overview

This program is intended for those who seek to improve and expand their knowledge of accurate (United States) coding and reimbursement for vascular surgery. The program covers 2012 coding and reimbursement updates including changes to renal artery selective arterial catheterization and imaging; vena cava filter insertion/repositioning/removal; PQRI measures; and reporting standards for interventional and open surgical procedures. The program also includes information about the global surgical package and how it impacts billing and reimbursement, along with the application of modifiers for streamlined reimbursement.
 
Learning Objectives
At the end of the session, participants should be able to:
  • Discuss the 2012 CPT and Medicare changes.
  • Demonstrate the application of modifiers for streamlined reimbursement.
  • Define the Global Surgical Package and how it impacts billing and reimbursement.
  • Explain the difference between incident-to and direct billing.
  • Understand the principle of component-coding.
  • Discuss the correct coding for key vascular surgery procedures.
  • Discuss the correct coding for key endovascular and open vascular procedures.
 
Who Should Attend?
These courses are designed for vascular surgeons and their office staff including practice managers, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, surgery schedulers, coders, and others who seek to improve and expand their knowledge of accurate coding and reimbursement for vascular surgery. (Faculty) 
 
Accreditation
The Society for Vascular Surgery® (SVS) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
 
CME Credit
The SVS designates this live activity for a maximum of 11 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 
 
AAPC Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Credit
This course has prior approval of the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) for 11 Continuing Education Units. Granting of prior approval in no way constitutes endorsement by the Academy of the program, content or the program sponsor.
 

E & M Coding for Vascular Surgeons (Optional Workshop)

Workshop Overview
Evaluation and management (E & M) codes continue to be misunderstood and misused by physicians. Medicare and private payers have responded by targeting E & M services for audit. This workshop will focus on coding and documentation rules for choosing a correct E & M category and level of service, specifically for the vascular surgeon. Differences between Medicare and private payers will be reviewed.
 
Learning Objectives
At the end of the session, participants should be able to:
  • Describe the coding and documentation rules for key E & M categories.
  • Discuss how Medicare changes to the consultation category will affect vascular surgeons.
  • Understand the documentation requirements for the history, exam and medical decision making components for an E & M service.
  • Discuss the correct use of E & M modifiers in vascular surgery.

A block of guest rooms has been reserved for SVS attendees. The special group rate of US$199/night*, single/double occupancy, is available on a first-come, first-served basis until March 2 or until the block sells out, whichever comes first. The conference rate is available for hotel stays from March 19 through 27 based on availability.

Check-in time is 3:00 pm; check-out time is Noon, after Noon additional charges will apply. An early departure fee of $100 will apply for any guest checking out prior to the scheduled departure date 

Limited Complimentary Registration Available for Vascular Surgery Trainees/Recent Graduates
SVS has approved 25 second year vascular fellows, PGY5 (“Chief”) integrated residents, or recent vascular surgery graduates (must have completed training within the last 8 months) to receive complimentary registration for the Spring 2012 Coding Course, held March 23-24, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Washington in Washington, DC. Complimentary registration to the course also includes the optional workshop, E & M Coding for Vascular Surgeons, held on Friday, March 23 at 9:00 am – Noon.
 
In order to be eligible to apply for the complimentary registration, vascular trainees/recent graduates must meet the following criteria:
 
  • Be an active SVS Candidate Member 
  • Be in their last year of vascular surgery fellowship/residency (training to be completed in 2012) OR have   completed their vascular surgery fellowship/residency within the last 8 months.
  • There may only be one application per institution

The selection process will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Current trainees should discuss attendance with their program director before applying to confirm the necessary time-off to attend the course. If less than 25 vascular trainees/recent graduates sign up for this course, the offer can be extended to fellows/residents who are not in their last year of fellowship/residency. Trainees that received complimentary registration for previous Coding Courses are not eligible to apply.
