Two Options to Successfully Treat Aneurysms: New Video Explains Condition in Layman's Terms

CHICAGO - Frank R. Arko, M.D., a vascular surgeon with both the Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute and the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, is featured in a new, broadcast quality healthcare video produced by the Society for Vascular Surgery®.

The video explains the vascular condition and treatment of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The condition occurs when blood pressure causes a weakness in the body’s largest artery, the aorta. The weakening or bulge can lead to rupture and internal bleeding. AAAs require immediate medical attention.

According to the National Institutes of Health, 15,000 Americans die each year from ruptured AAAs. Many patients die from an AAA before they reach a hospital.

“There are two ways to fix an AAA,” said Dr. Arko. “There’s the standard open repair and there’s the less invasive stent graft. Both procedures strengthen the aorta.” Detected early, the repair of AAAs has a 95 percent success rate.

Persons most at risk for AAA are:

• over age 60
• smoke
• have high blood pressure
• have high cholesterol
• are obese
• have atherosclerosis (clogged arteries)
• have a family history of AAA.

Non-invasive screening tests can detect AAAs. For more information on vascular health and AAA, log onto www.VascularWeb.org®.
