CHICAGO –Society for Vascular Surgery® (SVS) members have answered the request of the United States Army and volunteered to care for American military personnel wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. These soldiers are transported to the United States Army’s Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) in Germany.

"The United States Army and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center is grateful to the more than 60 vascular surgeons who have volunteered to assist our military doctors in treating our wounded warriors,” Colonel John Cho, Commanding Officer of LRMC. "For more than two years SVS has provided a vascular surgeon to care to our wounded warriors at LRMC in Germany. Their dedication is admirable and helps us provide the best care possible."

Since 2004, more than 66,000 wounded military personnel have been treated at LRMC. Because the medical center has a limited number of  vascular surgeons, SVS has assisted with care by providing continuous two-week rotations by its members.  The volunteering SVS members at LRMC provide the expertise of specialists in the care of veins and arteries. Together with LRMC medical personnel, they have saved the limbs and lives of America’s military soldiers.

“SVS members are proud to assist the Army’s doctors who are very skilled in trauma cases,” said Robert Zwolak, MD, SVS President. “Our surgeons have been trained in the most cutting-edge technology and work closely with military medical professionals. Together, we are a great team. Our membership is extremely responsive to the call for volunteers. They are pleased to lend a hand in caring for the men and women defending our country.”
The Army requested help from SVS Sept. 2007. Immediately, SVS members agreed to support the troops. Currently, there is a waiting list for SVS surgeons who are willing to volunteer at LRMC during 2011. Review the complete list of SVS volunteers at LRMC.
