Leap Year Proposal for Four Years Henceforth

February 27, 2012    Contact:   Sue Crosson-Knutson    312-334-2311

CHICAGO - Once-every-four-years, Leap Day, -which occurs this Wed., Feb. 29 - reminds us to consider the vastness of the cosmos and the wonders of nature.

“We should ponder the mysteries of the universe as well as appreciate the science of our bodies,” said Carlos Rueda, M.D., a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery®.  As a vascular surgeon, Dr. Rueda encourages his patients to appreciate their health every day.

“Leap Day 2012 is the ideal time to set a goal of better health before Leap Day 2016,” said Dr. Rueda. “A leap into a regimen of daily exercise, eating right, maintaining a healthy body weight, not smoking, and drinking alcohol in moderation can result in better health four years from now.”

Better health is a positive leap for all Americans. “Exercise and food choices affect blood pressure, cholesterol, and body weight,” said Dr. Rueda. “These impact health especially the condition of our veins and arteries.”

Thirty minutes of exercise every day can impact vascular health. High blood pressure affects one of three Americans more than 20 years-of-age according to 2010 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics.

The fourth leading cause of death in America is stroke according to 2010 National Vital Statistics Report. In that year, 137,000 Americans died from strokes.

“To check vascular health, non-invasive ultrasound screenings are available,” said Dr. Rueda. “To correct vascular conditions, most doctors will suggest lifestyle changes first. If necessary, medications, stents, and bypass surgery are options.”
