 Julie Ann Freischlag, MD, of MD, Elected First Female Vice President of the Society for Vascular Surgery

CHICAGO - Julie Ann Freischlag, MD, of Maryland, was elected 2011-2012 Vice President of the Society for Vascular Surgery® (SVS) on June 17, 2011 during the Vascular Annual Meeting® in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Freischlag is the Surgeon-in-Chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She is also the William Stewart Halsted Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  

“The Society for Vascular Surgery is excited to have Dr. Freischlag accept this important leadership role,” said SVS President Dr. Richard P. Cambria. “She is an accomplished surgeon and author who serves as an outstanding role model for females and males in the field of vascular healthcare.” 

Dr. Freischlag is the editor of the Archives of Surgery and the associate editor of the American Journal of Surgery. She serves on the editorial boards of the Annals of Vascular Surgery, the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, and the Journal of the American Medical Association. 

In addition to her dedication to SVS, Dr. Freischlag is involved with the American College of Surgeons, American Medical Women’s Associations, Association for Academic Surgery, Association of Women Surgeons, Chesapeake Vascular Society, and the Society of Surgical Chairs.

She has served as the principal investigator on several major grants including the Open vs. Endo-Vascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Trial. Her research interests lie in the effects of smoking on arterial and venous endothelium, causes of atherosclerosis and intimal hyperplasia.

Dr. Freischlag earned her medical degree from Rush University in Chicago. She completed her vascular surgery fellowship at University California Los Angeles (UCLA).
