CHICAGO – Julie Ann Freischlag, MD, of Maryland, was elected 2012-2013 President-Elect of the Society for Vascular Surgery® (SVS) on June 8, 2012 during the Vascular Annual Meeting® in National Harbor, MD.
Dr. Freischlag is the Surgeon-in-Chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She is also the William Stewart Halsted Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
“The Society for Vascular Surgery is excited to have Dr. Freischlag accept this important leadership role,” said SVS President Peter Gloviczki, MD. “She is an accomplished surgeon and author. She is an outstanding role model for females and males in the field of vascular healthcare.”
Dr. Freischlag is the editor of the Archives of Surgery and the associate editor of the American Journal of Surgery. She serves on the editorial boards of the Annals of Vascular Surgery, the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, and the Journal of the American Medical Association.
In addition to her dedication to SVS, Dr. Freischlag is involved with the American College of Surgeons as a regent, the Eastern Vascular Society, the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, and is a past president of the Association of VA Surgeons, the Baltimore Academy of Surgery, and the Society of Surgical Chairs.
She has served as the principal investigator on several major grants and presently is the national principal investigator for the OVER (Open vs. Endovascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms) VA cooperative trial. She is a national and international expert on thoracic outlet syndrome and has written extensively on the diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes. Dr. Freischlag is poised to conduct a clinical trial comparing first rib resection and scalenectomy to Botox injections in patients with neurogenic symptoms.
Dr. Freischlag earned her medical degree from Rush University in Chicago. She completed both her general surgery residency and vascular fellowship at University California Los Angeles (UCLA).
