─Joseph John Ricotta, MD, was elected to distinguished fellow status of the Society for Vascular Surgery® (SVS) at the 67th Vascular Annual Meeting® on May 30, 2013. At Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Ga., he is the director of the Heart and Vascular Institute. Dr. Ricotta also is the director of Vascular and Endovascular Services and chair of the Department of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy. His election was based upon his scholarly research activities, creative professional activities and broadly recognized teaching excellence.
He graduated from Yale University in New Haven, Conn. with a degree in biology, and obtained his Master's degree in molecular and cellular biology from the State University of New York in Buffalo at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pa., and completed a general surgery residency at Johns Hopkins and vascular surgery fellowships at the Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic.
In addition to being a current member of 24 medical societies, Dr. Ricotta has served as the chair for many committees including: the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society’s young surgeons advisory committee and program committee; the Society for Clinical Surgery's incoming fellows program; and the Society for Clinical Surgery's patient advocacy committee. He also is the chair of the carotid stent committee at Northside Hospital. Dr. Ricotta also has been a member of multiple committees at SVS and participates and consults for many industrial companies.
Dr. Ricotta is an associate editor for the Annals of Vascular Surgery, has served as an editor for Perspectives in Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, and is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Surgery®, Surgery: Current Research, and Endovascular Today. He has authored over 150 published abstracts and articles, and serves as an invited manuscript reviewer for approximately 10 professional medical publications.
Internationally, Dr. Ricotta is a founder and meeting chair of the International Aortic Summit in Venice, Italy, and has participated in preparing many educational programs.
