 Bruce A. Perler, MD, MBA Elected as Society for Vascular Surgery Vice President

CHICAGO–Bruce A. Perler, MD, was elected May 31, 2013 as the 2013-2014 Vice- President of the Society for Vascular Surgery® (SVS) during the 67th Vascular Annual Meeting® in San Francisco, Calif. He is the chief, division of vascular surgery and endovascular therapy and director of the Vascular Noninvasive Laboratory at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He also was named as Julius H. Jacobson II, M.D. professor of surgery at the The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2002.   
Dr. Perler has been a member of the SVS Board of Directors for 10 years. He has served as the initial chairman of the Communications Committee, and subsequently as chair of the Research Council, and Clinical Practice Council. During his tenure as chair of the Clinical Practice Council, the Private Practice Committee, the Comparative Effectiveness Committee and the Young Surgeons Advisory Committee were established.  He has had many other leadership positions in vascular surgery, including being the president of the Southern Association of Vascular Surgery, the Eastern Vascular Society, and the Chesapeake Vascular Society.
In addition to his longstanding interest in cerebrovascular disease and especially carotid endarterectomy, Dr. Perler's clinical surgical expertise includes the evaluation and treatment of aortic and peripheral aneurysms, renal and mesenteric occlusive disease, severe peripheral arterial disease and limb salvage revascularization.  
Dr. Perler’s research has included clinical outcomes analyses of vascular surgical and endovascular interventions, defining the influence of surgeon and institutional volume on the outcomes of carotid and aortic aneurysm surgery, and in evaluating the impact of new, minimally invasive, therapies on clinical and economic outcomes.  He has been a Consultant to the Circulatory Devices Panel, Center for Devices and Radiologic Health of the Food and Drug Administration, as well as on the Expert Panel on Interventional Radiology and the American College of Radiology Task Force on Appropriateness Criteria since 1996.  
At Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Perler has received the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award. As a visiting professor he has delivered nearly 300 lectures at national and international symposia and postgraduate courses. In1998 he established the hospital's Vascular Surgery Fellowship and served as program director until 2009. 

Dr. Perler had edited or co-edited five vascular surgery textbooks and has authored more than 200 medical journal articles and textbook chapters on the diagnosis and treatment of the entire spectrum of circulatory diseases. He has served on the editorial boards of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Vascular, the Annals of Vascular Surgery and the Journal of Vascular Surgery® (JVS). In 2009 he became the senior editor of the JVS.  
Dr. Perler has been recognized for his clinical and academic contributions by a number of organizations, such as America’s Top Doctors; Marquis Who’s Who in America; Who's Who in Science and Engineering; Strathmore’s Who’s Who; America’s Top Surgeons: Consumers’ Research Council of America; The Top Doctors List: Center of the Study of Services; The Best Doctors in America; and West's Who's Who in Health and Medical Services.
