CHICAGO – The Society for Vascular Surgery® (SVS) elected H. Edward Garrett, Jr., MD, as a Distinguished Fellow during their Vascular Annual Meeting® held June 16-18, 2011 in Chicago.
The designation of Distinguished Fellow is bestowed upon an active, international, or senior member of the Society for Vascular Surgery who has made substantial, sustained contributions in two of three categories – research, service, or education. The application process requires three letters of support from SVS Distinguished Fellows.
Dr. Garrett is the Chief and Program Director, Division of Peripheral Vascular Surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. He is also a Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. In addition, Dr. Garrett is the Heart and Lung Transplantation Director for the University of Tennessee / Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis. He maintains consultant status at the following Memphis hospitals: Memphis VA Medical Center, Methodist Central Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
Through the Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic in Memphis, Dr. Garrett maintains a professional medical practice. He is the Medical Director for the Northwest Mississippi School of Respiratory Therapy in Senatobia, MS. Dr. Garrett is board certified in general surgery, thoracic surgery, and vascular surgery.
Since 1991, Dr. Garrett has been involved in 48 research projects. He is a reviewer for two medical journals and has authored or co-authored 32 peer-reviewed journal articles. Dr. Garrett maintains membership in 11 professional societies. He has had 66 invited lectures or visiting professorships.
Educated at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Dr. Garrett completed his medical internship, residency, and fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. His peripheral vascular fellowship occurred at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Memphis.
