CHICAGO, IL (Sept. 23, 2010) – President of the Society for Vascular Surgery, Robert Zwolak, MD, PhD, was named one of 19 appointed members of the new US Government General Accountability Office (GAO) Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).
Dr. Zwolak is the 2010-2011 president of the 3,350 member Chicago-headquartered Society for Vascular Surgery®. A vascular surgeon at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, Dr. Zwolak is also a professor of surgery at Dartmouth Medical School, and the chief of surgery at White River Junction Veterans Medical Center in White River Junction, VT.
Appointed by Gene L. Dodaro, Acting Comptroller General of the United States and head of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), Zwolak will serve a six-year term as the designated surgical representative on the PCORI board. Alongside the 19 appointed board members will be both the Director of the National Institutes of Health and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality .
PCORI is a non-profit organization intended to assist patients, clinicians, purchasers, and policy-makers in making informed health decisions by carrying out research projects that provide quality, relevant evidence on how diseases, disorders, and other health conditions can effectively and appropriately be prevented, diagnosed, treated, monitored, and managed. The organization was formed as a result of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.
