How to Apply
Complete the online application for international membership or download the application and submit it by March 1 annually via email (membership@vascularsociety.org), fax (312-334-2320) or mail to: Membership Coordinator, Society for Vascular Surgery® (SVS), 633 N. Saint Clair St., 22nd Floor, Chicago, IL 60611. For questions concerning international membership, email membership@vascularsociety.org or telephone 800-258-7188. Decisions are made at the Vascular Annual Business Meeting, held during the 2012 Vascular Annual Meeting®, June 7 - 9. Applicants are notified of their application status by July 1 annually.
Eligibility
International Membership may be granted to surgeons residing outside of the United States or Canada who have demonstrated knowledge and skill in the diagnosis and management of vascular disorders, by attainment of ONE of the following two criteria:
- Certification in Vascular Surgery from the United States, Canada, or equivalent; or
- Surgeons whose clinical practice is dedicated primarily to vascular surgery, as demonstrated by case logs, contributions to vascular education and/or research, participation in regional or local vascular societies.
Important Documentation Required for Complete Application
Two letters from physicians are required. The letters must comment on the applicant’s commitment to, and practice of, vascular surgery. This requirement can be waived in situations where Active or other International SVS members are not available to provide supporting letters. As an alternative, the SVS Membership Committee may consider substitution of a letter from the international applicant’s home society. The international applicant must be a member of the recognized vascular society for his or her country. The home society letter would attest to membership in good standing in the society, and would summarize the applicant’s qualifications for SVS membership. The committee prefers that all letters are written in English.
International Membership Benefits
International Members enjoy the full benefits and privileges of membership, except that they cannot vote on Society business, hold elected office or serve as members of the Councils or Board of Directors.
Election to Membership
If the Board of Directors and the Membership Committee approve the application, the name of the applicant for International Membership will be presented to the Society at a regularly convened Annual Business Meeting of the membership for final action. A majority vote of those members present and voting is required for election to International Membership.
Any applicant who is not approved by the Membership Committee and/or Board of Directors or is not elected by the membership may reapply. A new application must be submitted, including a new completed application form and two new letters of sponsorship, as described above.
