SVS Women Members Hold First Leadership Retreat

Thirty-eight women vascular surgeons attended the first SVS Women's Leadership Retreat April 3-5, 2008 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The retreat was presented by the SVS Women's Issues Committee and made possible through a grant from Medtronic.

"With so few women in vascular surgery, it is often a challenge for female vascular surgeons to develop relationships with a mentor or role model who has faced the same issues they are facing," said Dr. Cynthia Shortell, chair, SVS Women's Issues Committee.

"In this retreat format, female vascular surgeons were able to learn leadership skills and share experiences in a way that has not been possible in the past. Many new, and hopefully lasting relationships were forged this weekend."

Attendees participated in discussions on developing their own leadership style facilitated by Dr. Janet Bickel. Workshops included advice on managing key relationships, making effective presentations, and negotiating for resources. Facilitators included Colleen Brophy, MD; Paul Casella, MFA; and Susan Scott, MD. SVS President K. Wayne Johnston, MD, spoke about his path to becoming the leader of the largest vascular society in the North America. Professor of Management Emeritus, David Young, D.B.A., Boston University School of Management presented the keynote address on financial management.

"Overall response to the event was very positive. Participants left with career development agendas identifying three- to five-year goals, plans to develop programs at their institutions, and methods to forge improved national and institutional relations. Everyone agreed that the program was worthwhile and should be held again in the next one to two years," said Dr. Lois Killewich, chair, SVS Women's Leadership Retreat.

The SVS Women's Issues Committee is dedicated to recruiting more women to the field of vascular surgery and assisting women vascular surgeons throughout their careers. They are determining the feasibility of presenting retreats in the future.
