The Albany vascular surgery training program is available to both graduates of medical school to start a 0+5 program and to 5+2 candidates. The vascular training program at Albany Medical center provides training in all facets of vascular surgery including open and endovasular arterial reconstruction as well as venous surgery and dialysis access. All training is provided by a staff of 13 board certified vascular surgeons. Our graduates are able to enter in to vascular practice and be able to handle all aspects of vascular care with confidence.

The program emphasizes broad-based clinical training. It is based in two tertiary care hospitals, and residents will also rotate at a large community hospital. We perform a large number of tertiary care cases, but we have also a very strong representation of "bread and butter" vascular surgery cases. Of our case volume of 2200 cases, roughly 50% are endovascular.

5+2 Fellowship Program: The overall goal of BIDMC's 5+2 Vascular Surgery Residency Program is to prepare residents to function as qualified practioners of vascular surgery at the high level of performance expected of a board-certified specialist by providing comprehensive clinical training in vascular surgery, basic science or clinical research experience for the resident, and excellent surgical and medical care. By accomplishing these goals, we hope to produce trainees who will be able to successfully pursue a career in academic surgery or enter private practice in Vascular Surgery. Overall, the program is designed with graduated responsibility and supervision at each level of training.

0+5 Residency Program: During the first four years of the BIDMC 0-5 training program, trainees will be integrated into the department’s ACGME-accredited General Surgery Residency Program. General surgery rotations are selected to provide the best operative experience in particular with open abdominal surgery. Residents will also spend extra time on the vascular surgery services at BIDMC, Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge Hospital, and Saint Vincent Hospital, as well as the department’s vascular lab. Their final chief year will be spent entirely on a vascular surgery service. Integrated vascular surgery residents will spend two years of T-32 funded research in either Basic Science or Outcomes Research between their third and fourth years of training.

The Program Director is Ali AbuRahma, M.D., and this is a 2 year program fully accredited by the ACGME. We have 6 full time vascular surgeons, 3 endovascular interventionalists, and 1 preventative medicine specialist, all of whom are dedicated to the teaching of young surgeons. Our institution is an extremely high volume center with a myriad of different cases. Our open surgical volume between 6 vascular surgeons exceeds 1,000 cases annually. Fellows will perform more than 50 major cases monthly.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency program provides graduated, incremental training in both vascular and core surgery. Residents have the opportunity to spend an additional research year earning a masters degree in public health at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (TDI). We match one five-year position each year. Dartmouth-Hitchcock also offers a two-year Vascular Surgery Fellowship for residents who have completed general surgery training. The fellowship is organized so that interventional procedures, open surgery, inpatient and outpatient care, and vascular laboratory instruction are integrated throughout both years of the fellowship. In addition, fellows have one academic day per week to allow for clinical research. We match one two-year position each year. Nine board-certified vascular surgeons staff a dedicated vascular service at this 400-bed tertiary care facility.

The institute is comprised of a newly opened state-of-the-art outpatient and inpatient center. The section of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery has full access to modern endovascular suites, contemporary cardiovascular operating rooms and dedicated inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular patient care facilities. The section is supported by a clinical research program, and the fellow will have time and support for research in addition to exposure to all facets of open and minimally invasive Vascular Surgery. The IUMC Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency Program is a 5 year program leading to Board Certification in Vascular Surgery.  It provides the full scope of core surgical training in addition to experiences in cardiology, radiology, urologic retroperitoneal exposures and hematology. The last two years reflect the same experience as that of the Vascular Fellows (5/2).  The last two years are based on 3 month rotations at three different hospital systems which provide the full range of open and percutaneous vascular procedures in addition to the time required for initial clinical evaluation and post operative followup.  The students are provided the experience needed to complete the RPVI during training.

Loyola University Medical Center's Fellowship in Vascular Surgery offers exposure to the full spectrum of open vascular and endovascular cases, including cerebrovascular, aortoiliac and infrainguinal occlusive disease, abdominal aneurysms, visceral arterial disease, arteriovenous access and venous interventions. The vascular service at Loyola supports the facility’s busy Level 1 Trauma Center. The volume and complexity of both open and endovascular procedures easily fulfills Vascular Surgery Fellowship case requirements. The Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency Program at Mayo Clinic is based in Rochester, Minnesota and is a five year clinical program. The 24 months of core surgical training is completed within the first 2.5 years and the remaining time is dedicated to arterial, venous, and lymphatic disease management and treatment.  Emphasis is made on advanced open and endovascular procedures, with a strong experience in complex aortic work. In addition, clinical research is required and fully supported, and protected education time in the simulation center is built into the curriculum. The Vascular Surgery Fellowship is a two year clinical program with emphasis on complex open operations, including thoracoabdominal, aortic, and visceral work, and advanced endovascular procedures. Clinical research is required and is fully supported with funding available for statistics and meeting travel costs. The crown jewel of the Division is our accredited Vascular Surgery fellowship, which has been in existence since 1978. This is a two-year fellowship, and qualified applicants have completed the requirements for certification in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery. A 0 – 5 training pathway is planned but not yet accepting applicants.  The strength of our fellowship is the tremendous depth and breadth of clinical material. We offer a comprehensive educational program in routine and complex vascular reconstructions using both open and endovascular techniques. The endovascular and open surgery experience is combined seamlessly throughout the fellowship experience, as in real world practice. Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is a busy tertiary center with a busy vascular surgery service. Pennsylvania Hospital has an accredited independent two year vascular fellowship: the first year is devoted to open and endovascular interventions, non-invasive vascular lab, venous clinic, and arterial clinic, and the second year is devoted to open and endovascular interventions and arterial clinic. A close personal relationship is established between the attendings and fellows. A fixed imaging endovascular operating room suite is used solely by the vascular surgeons who perform all types of open and endovascular procedures.

The Division of Vascular Surgery offers a five year vascular surgery residency program, with one position available each year, approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in 2009. The operative caseload is varied, covering virtually every aspect of peripheral vascular surgery, but is weighed toward open and endovascular management of carotid stenosis, aortic aneurysms, and lower extremity arterial occlusive disease.  SIU has an outstanding reputation for innovative methods of surgical education, including a premier surgical skills lab.  Vascular surgery residents will participate in structured learning experiences including a “boot camp” to master basic surgical skills such as: knot tying, suturing, central line placement, anastomotic techniques, chest tube insertion, surgical airway placement and laparoscopic skills.  In addition, vascular residents will participate in the department’s Residents as Teachers (RATS) program.  Core surgical rotations are concentrated in the first three years of the residency in conjunction with the Division of General Surgery.

Stony Brook Medicine offers a five-year vascular surgery residency as well as a traditional two-year residency (fellowship), both of which are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). These training programs are designed to prepare physicians for the pursuit of an academic career in vascular surgery equally as well as for private practice in vascular surgery. Our new integrated vascular program is one of six available nationwide. Residents are chosen out of medical school and enter the five-year program which culminates in eligibility for certification in vascular surgery. For those physicians who are sure that they want vascular surgery as a career, this residency provides focused training and reduces the amount of training time from the standard training period (ie, five years of general + two years of vascular) by two years. Those who choose this path will not be eligible for certification in general surgery.

The Division of Vascular Surgery boasts strong collaborative relationships with cardiology, neurology, and interventional radiology. Our surgeons have demonstrated leadership in patient care, surgical training, and advancing the fonteirs of science. We have a state of the art ICAVL-certified Vascular Lab and a spacious multimodality Hybrid OR suite built in 2012. In addition to comprehensive open and endovascular offerings, areas of particular expertise include complex and re-do open carotid and aortic surgery, chronic venous disease (obstruction), stem cell therapy.

The five-year integrated vascular surgery residency program benefits from a unique partnership that involves UC Davis Health System, the Northern California VA Health Care System, and the David Grant USAF Medical Center. Because of this relationship, we offer two positions each year. One is for a military resident, one for a civilian. All aspects of vascular care are learned  including: diagnosis, medical management, surgical care and use of endovascular procedures. The UC Denver Vascular Surgery Fellowship will be an RRC-accredited two-year fellowship leading to board eligibility for a certificate of Special Qualifications in Vascular Surgery granted by the American Board of Surgery. The program will start in 2014. The first year is devoted to a large number and variety of open and endovascular cases, and supervising the management of an active inpatient vascular surgery service at UC Denver. The second year will be spent as the primary surgeon at multiple affiliate sites within the University health system. There is an emphasis on complex aortic pathology, advanced endovascular interventions, noninvasive diagnosis, and clinical research. There is opportunity to present at national meetings and produce peer-reviewed publications during both years.

We have designed a rotation schedule that integrates appropriate rotations during the 1st 3 years, & provides chief residency experience in vascular surgery during the 4th & 5th years. 36 months will be spent on vascular surgery, & 24 months on core or general surgery rotations.

UB Vascular Training programs provide residents and fellows with exposure to both academic and community-based vascular surgeons, and the opportunity to work in multiple health-care systems.  These systems include a Level 1 Trauma Center; a tertiary referral VA system; a large private hospital; and a brand-new vascular institute, with state-of-the-art angiography suites and hybrid OR's dedicated to vascular surgery.  The residency program is well-integrated with general surgery, with vascular PGY-1 and PGY-2 residents treated similar to categorical general surgery residents.

The University of Chicago Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy Fellowship is a well rounded program that offers fellows exposure to the full range of vascular surgery procedures during the course of their training, including both minimally invasive (endovascular) procedures and traditional open surgical techniques. The fellowship provides access to the full range of vascular procedures performed by our surgeons including complex aortic reconstructions, thoraco-abdominal aneurysms, complicated cerebrovascular problems and mesenteric reconstructions. The second year is devoted primarily to complex endovascular procedures as well as exposure to the ICAVAL accredited non-invasive vascular laboratory.

We offer two ACGME-accredited training programs: a two-year vascular surgery fellowship, and an integrated five-year vascular surgery residency (with one year of research added between the second and third clinical years).  We have divided the service to include two separate services so trainees can operate, see patients, and manage the service as Chief Resident.  All residents will spend time in our ultrasound lab and will be prepared to receive their RPVI certification.  In addition, residents rotate in our Vein Center and spend one month off-site in our Fingerlakes offices.  We have educational conferences each morning with journal club once a month in the evening.  Our faculty are committed to education and truly enjoy working with our trainees.
