Vascular Health Spokesperson Bureau Available with Expertise on All Aspects of Vascular Health

With an increase in potential vascular disease cases, knowledge of all treatments will become even more critical to ensure seniors receive the best care.

Chicago (March 10, 2006) —

It is anticipated that vascular disease will be at the forefront of medicine as the U.S. population rates for seniors increases. In 2005, the U.S. Census reported there were more than 67 million people aged 55 and older. It anticipates that number to rise to more than 87 million in 2015. With this increase in potential vascular disease cases, knowledge of all treatments will become even more critical to ensure seniors receive the best care.

“Vascular disease may be the most evolving field in medicine today. We are experiencing an explosion in new technology that gives vascular surgeons innovative procedures to treat patients using noninvasive diagnostic tests, medical treatments, minimally invasive procedures and open surgeries,” said Dr. Bruce Perler, vascular surgeon and chair of the communications committee for the SVS. “We feel it is important that seniors understand the diseases and their options for optimum care. The bureau includes highly qualified vascular surgeons available to answer questions from the press.”

Legislators addressed the future impact of vascular disease in seniors, by passing the Screening Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Very Efficiently (SAAAVE) Act as part of the S.1932 Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 which President Bush signed into law on Feb. 8, 2006. It contains a provision that will implement aortic aneurysm screening as a Medicare benefit. Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms was the only new preventive benefit included in the Act, and will save thousands of lives.

Because they focus their practices totally on vascular disease, vascular surgeons are the experts who are most qualified to treat all types of the disease and determine appropriate treatment for reaching optimal outcomes.
