Why: Vascular health is moving to the forefront of public attention. It is critical the press reports the most current information so seniors understand vascular disease and know their treatment options. Significant trends currently affecting vascular healthcare:

There is expected to be an increase in potential vascular disease cases. In 2005, the U.S. Census reported there were more than 67 million people aged 55 and older. It anticipates that number to rise to more than 87 million in 2015.
Vascular health treatments are exploding with new technology available to vascular surgeons to treat patients using noninvasive diagnostic tests, medical treatments, minimally invasive procedures, and open surgeries.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening will become a Medicare benefit beginning Jan. 1, 2007, when the Screening Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Very Efficiently (SAAAVE) Act is implemented. President Bush signed the Budget Reconciliation into law on Feb. 8, 2006, which contained SAAAVE. It provides for one-time AAA screening at the Welcome to Medicare physical for male-ever smokers, and men and women with a family history of AAA. Thousands of lives may be saved with these screenings.

Who: The Vascular Annual Meeting is attended by 1,200 of the country’s top vascular surgeons, and, this year, international vascular surgeons.
