CHICAGO (June 18, 2007) —
Dr. James S. T. Yao was presented the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) Lifetime Achievement Award at the 61st Annual Meeting of the Society for Vascular Surgery on June 7, 2007. As a leader in vascular surgery in the U.S., Dr. Yao is noted for his contributions in the area of the vascular laboratory and clinical surgery. This award is the highest honor bestowed by the SVS on one of its members. It recognizes an individual’s outstanding and sustained contributions to the profession and the SVS, and honors exemplary professional practice and leadership.
Dr. Yao is a professor emeritus in vascular surgery in the department of surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “Dr. Yao’s dedication to vascular surgery and specifically to the Society is enormous,” said K. Wayne Johnston, MD, SVS president. “He has been a well-known force in vascular surgery for many years through the establishment of several vascular societies, the creation of formal protocols for noninvasive vascular studies, as well the establishment of the first vascular laboratory in Chicago in 1972. Dr. Yao truly is one of the fathers of today’s modern vascular laboratories.”
Dr. Yao has been a leading figure in vascular surgery for more than three decades. He was one of the founding members of the Society for Vascular Ultrasound, along with D. Eugene Strandness, Jr., MD and David S. Sumner, MD. He also helped establish accreditation for vascular laboratories and taught many vascular surgeons how to establish laboratories and to use this noninvasive technology to diagnose vascular disease. In 1975 Dr. Yao and John J. Bergan, MD created one of the first vascular surgery fellowship programs in the U.S. at Northwestern University.
His published work includes more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, 228 chapters and 53 books. Dr. Yao has served on the editorial board or as editor of many journals, including the Annals of Vascular Surgery, Asian Journal of Surgery, British Journal of Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, and Journal of Vascular Surgery.
