Dr. Matthew J. Eagleton was presented the Pacific Vascular Research Foundation (PVRF) 2007 Wylie Scholar in Academic Vascular Surgery at the 61st Annual Meeting of the Society for Vascular Surgery on June 7, 2007.

Dr. Eagleton is an assistant professor of surgery in the departments of vascular surgery and biomedical engineering in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. He was chosen for the Wylie Scholar in Academic Vascular Surgery for his research into the causes and treatments for abdominal aortic aneurysms, a vascular condition that affects two million Americans and contributes to more than 15,000 deaths every year. His research is directed to developing a better understanding of how aneurysms form through learning more about protein enzymes. This knowledge will allow the development of drug therapy to either limit the growth of an already formed aneurysm or prevent its formation in the first place.

The competitive Wylie Scholar award, named in honor of Edwin J. Wylie, MD, eminent pioneer and visionary who established vascular surgical training in San Francisco, recognizes and financially assists vascular surgeon-scientists throughout North America who are engaged in an independent research project with the potential to revolutionize how vascular diseases are treated or cured.
