Luis R. Leon, Jr., MD, RVT, Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery, University of Arizona, Presented Award by the American Vascular Association
CHICAGO (June 19, 2007) —
Dr. Luis R. Leon was presented the American Vascular Association (AVA) E. J. Wylie Traveling Fellowship Award at the 61st Annual Meeting of the Society for Vascular Surgery on June 7, 2007. This award is presented to assist a fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) with travel and professional exchange within established vascular centers in the United States and abroad.
Dr. Leon is an assistant professor of clinical surgery in the department of surgery at the University of Arizona. He was chosen for the E. J. Wylie Traveling Fellowship Award to gain expertise from sites in the U.S. and internationally in the field of branched endografting for the management of aortic aneurysm in order to expand the proportion of his patients who are candidates for minimally invasive endovascular therapies.
“Dr. Leon’s research focuses on a population that is not currently an ideal candidate for open repair, given the magnitude of intervention needed and the often coexistence of severe comorbidities. Even with the introduction of endovascular methods for repair of aortic aneurysms, the majority of this population is still not considered an ideal candidate for minimally invasive intervention. His research regarding several modifications of the standard endovascular methodologies will help to expand this population’s candidacy for minimally invasive endovascular therapies,” said Dr. William H. Pearce, chair of the AVA.
The E. J. Wylie Traveling Fellowship Award provides the recipient the opportunity to briefly visit other vascular centers to stimulate academic inspiration, promote international exchange, and foster development of fraternal fellowship in vascular surgery. These objectives enhance the development of the fellow’s career in vascular surgery.
