Dr. K. Wayne Johnston was elected 2007-2008 president of the Society of Vascular Surgery (SVS) during the Vascular Annual Meeting on June 8, 2007. Nationally recognized for his experience and leadership, he leads the country’s largest vascular surgeon society with 2,400 members.
“Next year will prove a pivotal time in the Society’s history as it strives to raise public awareness of vascular health and to promote the critical role of the vascular surgeon,” said Dr. K. Craig Kent, outgoing president of the SVS. “Through his dedication to educating the medical community and patients by providing the most up-to-date vascular health information, Dr. Johnston is truly the ideal leader to guide the Society forward. Serving as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery from 1996 until 2003; as the founding editor of Vascular Specialist until 2007; and as the founding medical editor of VascularWeb, the SVS web site, Dr. Johnston has been at the forefront of recognizing the importance of educating and informing both the public and the vascular surgery specialty through new mediums and technologies.”
His accomplishments include the R. Fraser Elliott Chair in Vascular Surgery at the University of Toronto; recorder and member of the International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery Executive Committee; James IV traveling Fellow; and recipient of the Lister Prize for Surgical Research. He has served as the associate editor of the four recent editions of Rutherford’s Textbook of Vascular Surgery.
Dr. Johnston’s major research interests include basic studies of hemodynamics and investigations to understand the origin and errors of Doppler recordings and clinical studies of percutaneous balloon angioplasty and abdominal aortic aneurysms. He has had continuous research funding from the Canadian Institute for Health Research (previously the MRC) for 30 years.
He graduated cum laude from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, as the silver medalist; completed his general surgery residency at the University of Toronto and received his FRCS(C); and undertook fellowship training in vascular surgery in Toronto and at King’s College Medical School, London, England.
