K. Wayne Johnston, MD, FRCS(C), University of Toronto Elected SVS President-elect
CHICAGO (June 08, 2006) —
Dr. K. Wayne Johnston was elected 2006-2007 president-elect of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) at the Vascular Annual Meeting on June 2, 2006. He is professor of surgery and biomedical engineering at the University of Toronto and the R. Fraser Elliott Chair in Vascular Surgery.
“Dr. Johnston has worked tirelessly for the SVS,” said Dr. K. Craig Kent, president of the SVS. “He is truly a dedicated member. He established the SVS’s major publications, serving as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery until 2003; he currently serves as the founding editor of Vascular Specialist; and he developed and manages VascularWeb, the SVS website. Dr. Johnston has a passion for educating the medical community and patients with the most up-to-date vascular health information. I am proud to serve my presidency with Dr. Johnston at my side.”
His accomplishments include the R. Fraser Elliott Chair in Vascular Surgery; recorder and member of the International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery Executive Committee; James IV traveling Fellow; and recipient of the Lister Prize for Surgical Research. He has published more than 300 papers and book chapters, and made more than 350 presentations including many named lectures. He has served as the associate editor of the four recent editions of Rutherford’s Textbook of Vascular Surgery and provides chapter updates for the web version of the textbook.
Dr. Johnston’s major research interests include basic studies of hemodynamics and investigations to understand the origin and errors of Doppler recordings and clinical studies of percutaneous balloon angioplasty and abdominal aortic aneurysms.
He graduated cum laude from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, as the silver medalist; completed his general surgery residency at the University of Toronto and received his FRCS(C); and undertook fellowship training in vascular surgery in Toronto and at King’s College Medical School, London, England. He received the Certificate of Competence in Vascular Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.
