Evanston Vascular Surgeon, Kevin Halstuk, Will Run to Raise Money to Fight Vascular Disease

CHICAGO (October 10, 2006) —

Dr. Kevin Halstuk, vascular surgeon with Surgical Associates, Evanston, Ill., is participating in the 2006 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon on Oct. 22, 2006 as part of a team running to raise money to fight vascular disease. Vascular disease affects more than 40 million Americans, primarily seniors.

As the baby boomer population ages, it is important the public understands how to take care of their vascular health. The vascular surgeons running in the marathon are demonstrating the positive affect exercise has on good vascular health.

Halstuk is a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), an organization of 2,400 board-certified vascular surgeons dedicated to raising awareness about vascular health. Exercise can be beneficial in lowering the risk of some vascular diseases including carotid artery disease and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Both occur when arteries build up plaque, a sticky substance made up mostly of fat and cholesterol. The plaque narrows the passageway within the arteries and causes them to become stiff.

Carotid artery disease involves the two main arteries that carry blood from the heart up through the neck to the brain. Strokes result either from obstruction of blood flow to the brain by the plaque or when bits of plaque and clots break off from the plaque and flow to the brain. If left untreated, carotid artery disease may lead to stroke, where lack of oxygen and other essential nutrients cause damage to the brain.

PAD results when the peripheral arteries become too narrow or obstructed, and limit the blood flow to the legs. If left untreated, PAD can cause pain or aching in the legs, difficulty with walking, resting pain in the foot at night in bed, non-healing sores or infections in the toes or feet, and can lead to limb loss in its most severe form. In addition, it can be associated with other serious arterial conditions leading to heart attacks and stroke.
