Dr. Ronald J. Stoney was presented the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) Lifetime Achievement Award at the 60th Annual Vascular Meeting on June 1, 2006. He has served patients in northern California his entire career. This award is the highest honor bestowed by the SVS on one of its members. It recognizes an individual’s outstanding and sustained contributions to the profession and the SVS, and honors exemplary professional practice and leadership.

Dr. Stoney is a professor of surgery at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery. “Dr. Stoney’s dedication to vascular healthcare is legendary,” said Craig Kent, MD, SVS president. “He is internationally recognized as a master clinical surgeon, an outstanding educator, and a tireless and tenacious advocate for vascular surgery.”

Stoney has been a leading figure in vascular surgery for more than four decades. He served at nearly every major academic medical center in the United States and lectures around the world. He received an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Ferrara, Italy, for his longstanding record of academic accomplishment.

His published work includes more than 100 book chapters, more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, and co-authoring of a series of atlases in vascular disease. Stoney’s career is highlighted with a longstanding concern that high-quality research on the mechanism of vascular disease is critical to advancement of the specialty of vascular surgery. His peers regularly seek his counsel, and he is known as a role model and mentor.
