PHILADELPHIA (June 01, 2006) —
Dr. Melina Kibbe was presented the American Vascular Association (AVA) William J. von Liebig Award – Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08) at the 60th Vascular Annual Meeting on June 1, 2006. This award is presented in conjunction with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, to candidates who have demonstrated the potential to develop into independent investigators.
Dr. Kibbe is an assistant professor of surgery at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago. She was chosen for the Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award for her work in preventing the development of neointimal hyperplasia following arterial injury and vascular bypass surgery. Currently, no effective therapy exists to prevent the development of neointimal hyperplasia. “Dr. Kibbe’s work will serve as the basis for further studies on NO-mediated inhibition of neointimal hyperplasia. Her work has shown great promise, and we are very pleased to support her,” said Dr. William H. Pearce, chair of the AVA.
The Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (KO8) provides financial assistance over and above that offered by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (K08) mechanism. It supports a three- four- or five-year period of supervised research experience that may integrate didactic studies with laboratory or clinically-based research. The research must have intrinsic importance as well as serving as a suitable vehicle for learning the methodology, theories, and conceptualizations necessary for a well-trained, independent researcher.
