Alan Dardik, MD, Assistant Professor, Yale University, Presented Award by the American Vascular Association

PHILADELPHIA (June 01, 2006) —

Dr. Alan Dardik was presented the American Vascular Association (AVA) William J. von Liebig Award – Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08) at the 60th Vascular Annual Meeting on June 1, 2006. This award is presented in conjunction with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, to candidates who demonstrate the potential to develop into independent investigators.

Dr. Dardik is assistant professor, Department of Surgery, Section of Vascular Surgery, Yale University. He was chosen for the Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08) for his work in understanding the complex mechanisms by which vascular intervention, such as angioplasty or bypass surgery, fail prematurely.

By developing techniques to detect abnormal flow patterns and understanding the effects of the flow patterns on smooth muscle cells, the research hopes to develop vascular interventions that are longer-lasting and minimize patient suffering. “Dr. Dardik has shown great promise in researching advancements in vascular disease. We are very pleased to support him in his work,” said Dr. William H. Pearce, chair of the AVA.

The Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08) provides financial assistance over and above that offered by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute K08 mechanism. It supports a three- four- or five-year period of supervised research experience that may integrate didactic studies with laboratory or clinically-based research. The research must have intrinsic importance as well as serving as a suitable vehicle for learning the methodology, theories and conceptualizations necessary for a well-trained, independent researcher.
