PHILADELPHIA (June 01, 2006) —
Dr. Joseph S. Giglia was presented the American Vascular Association (AVA) E. J. Wylie Traveling Fellowship Award at the 60th Vascular Annual Meeting on June 1, 2006. This award is presented to assist a fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) with travel and professional exchange within established vascular centers in the United States and abroad.
Dr. Giglia is an assistant professor of surgery and interim director of vascular surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, and chief of vascular surgery at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Cincinnati. He was chosen for the E. J. Wylie Traveling Fellowship Award for his plans to develop a center for laparoscopic vascular surgery that will help lead the next revolution in minimally-invasive vascular surgery. “Laparoscopic vascular surgery is routinely performed in certain institutes in Europe and Canada, but the techniques are not widely performed in the United States. There is a great opportunity for further development and dissemination of laparoscopic vascular surgery techniques in the United States,” said Dr. William H. Pearce, chair of the AVA.
The E. J. Wylie Traveling Fellowship Award provides the recipient the opportunity to briefly visit other vascular centers to stimulate academic inspiration, promote international exchange, and foster development of fraternal fellowship in vascular surgery. These objectives enhance the development of the fellow’s career in vascular surgery.
