Robert McLafferty, MD, Southern Illinois University, Elected to Distinguished Fellows Status, Society for Vascular Surgery

PHILADELPHIA  (June 01, 2006) —

Dr. Robert B. McLafferty was elected to distinguished fellow status of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) at the 60th Vascular Annual Meeting on June 1, 2006. He is attending physician and surgeon, and assistant director of non-invasive vascular laboratories at Memorial Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital, Springfield, Ill. His election was based upon his scholarly research activities, creative professional activities, and broadly recognized teaching excellence.

“We are proud to include Dr. McLafferty as a distinguished fellow in the Society for Vascular Surgery,” said Craig Kent, MD, SVS president. “He exemplifies the qualities and commitment to excellence our membership subscribes to in vascular health care.”

Dr. McLafferty has been active in the enactment of a City of Springfield Ordinance banning smoking in all public buildings. As vice-chair of the Clinical Affairs for the Department of Surgery at Southern Illinois University, he initiated and coordinated projects including: creation of mechanisms to reflect overall patient satisfaction, organization and teaching a continuing medical education course on improving physician-patient communications, creation of a centralized patient call center, and implementation of a department-wide evaluation form. He mentors students, residents, and vascular surgery fellows to culmination of presentation and publication of research projects.

He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and is active with Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, Midwestern Vascular Society, American Venous Forum, Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, American Academy on Physician and Patient, International Society for Vascular Surgery, Society for Vascular Ultrasound, Illinois State Medical Society, Sangamon County Medical Society, American Medical Association Illinois Chapter, and Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society.
