Authors Needed for Online Clinical Resource UpToDate

Dear Program Directors:

As a fellow Program Director in Vascular Surgery, we invite you to become an author for the online electronic clinical resource UpToDate. We are excited to be working with UpToDate as the co-section editors for Vascular Surgery. UpToDate has over 350,000 users in more than 140 countries worldwide and is available to trainees in most teaching hospitals in the United States. Over 10 million topics are viewed month. While we eventually intend to provide a comprehensive resource for the broad spectrum of vascular surgery topics, we are initially focusing on developing a robust section on Peripheral Arterial Disease. We plan to incorporate each chapter in UpToDate into a series of resident training modules APDVS is developing for access through the APDVS (affiliated-society) link on SVS'

At this time, we are seeking program directors with expertise and interest to participate in this exciting project as an author for one of the following topics:

  1. Overview of peripheral arterial disease
  2. Clinical manifestations and (clinical) diagnosis of lower extremity peripheral arterial disease
  3. Role of imaging for the diagnosis and management of lower extremity peripheral arterial disease
  4. Epidemiology and natural history of lower extremity peripheral arterial disease
  5. Surgical and endovascular management of lower extremity claudication
  6. Management of lower extremity critical ischemia
  7. Lower extremity percutaneous interventional techniques
  8. Management of aortoiliac occlusive disease
  9. Surgical and endovascular techniques to restore vascular inflow to the lower extremities
  10. Role of fibrinolytic therapy in the management of lower extremity peripheral arterial disease

The primary mission of UpToDate is to improve the quality of health care by providing clinicians with the best and most current information to care for their patients. UpToDate is available in fifteen completed specialties (including General Internal Medicine plus subspecialties, Family Medicine, Ob/gyn, and Pediatrics). UpToDate is also developing content in the areas of Allergy/Immunology, Dermatology, and Psychiatry. The program contains over 7,700 topics and utilizes over 4,000 authors and editors from all over the world. Internally, there are over 40 physician editors on the UpToDate editorial staff. UpToDate works with seven national medical societies and is accredited by the ACCME; Subscribers can get CME credit just by using the program.

Senior authors should be at the Associate Professor or Professor level; Assistant Professors or Instructors must have recognized expertise. Fellows can participate as junior authors; residents and medical students may not participate. Authors receive biannual royalties for each published topic.

If you are interested in participating as an author for one of these topics, please respond by email to the Vascular Section Editors (emails listed below), and identify your topic(s) of interest. We will review your areas of interest and try to match your expertise with the selected topics. Authors who are selected will be notified shortly thereafter, and the staff at UpToDate will contact you with more detailed information regarding content submission. If you are not selected for one of these topics, there will certainly be future opportunities to contribute.

We think this is great opportunity for vascular surgeons to reach a very broad audience of both medical and surgical specialists. This project will also provide some of the content for our APDVS curriculum Web site for all vascular trainees. We sincerely hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to become involved in this unique educational project, and look forward to hearing back from you soon. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us directly.
