The Women’s Leadership Committee presents its second SVS Women's Leadership Retreat, October 22-24, 2009 at the Hotel Viking in Newport, R.I. This year’s retreat addresses the unique situations women face in the field of vascular surgery. It includes discussion on the trends affecting diversity issues within the vascular surgery specialty and helps participants understand the personal and professional pitfalls in addressing issues related to women in medicine.  

Retreat Objectives

  • Expand knowledge of current trends affecting diversity issues within the vascular surgery specialty.
  • Acquire a better understanding of the personal and professional pitfalls in addressing diversity issues.
  • Create a plan to identify personal priorities and long-term career choices to advance the position of women vascular surgeons and surgeons with diverse backgrounds and the health care of those patients.

Facilitators & Speakers

Facilitators are Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Medical University of South Carolina, Linda Austin, MD, and Medical Director and Vascular Surgeon, Roper St. Francis Heart and Vascular Center, Jeb Hallett, MD.

Speakers include: Senior Vice President and Chief of International Operations for New York Presbyterian Hospital, Kenneth Ouriel, MD, and SVS Diversity Committee Chair, Frederick Beavers, MD. Robert Zwolak, SVS president-elect, is the guest luncheon speaker.

  • Attendance is open to all SVS members, but limited to the number of people who can attend. It does not qualify for CME credit.
  • Registration fee is $220.

Accommodations
A block of rooms has been reserved at Hotel Viking at a special seminar rate of $219 single or double occupancy per night plus tax (currently at 13 percent). Please call the Hotel Viking directly at 401-848-4800 and request the group rate for the Society for Vascular Surgery. The cutoff for reservations is October 6, 2009, or until the block sells out so be sure to call for reservations as soon as possible!

  • Cancellations will be accepted 72 hours prior to scheduled arrival date.

Location/Ground Transportation
The Hotel Viking is located in Newport, Rhode Island, approximately 30 minutes from TF Green Airport in Providence. Shuttle service is available through Cozy Cab Shuttle: 401-846-2500 or www.cozytrans.com. The fare is approximately $25 one-way. Advance reservations are required. Taxi service is also available and fares range between $50-$70 one-way, excluding gratuity.

Vascular Surgery in the Next Decade: The Impact of Cultural Change on How You Practice

The convergence of several trends in the next decade point to the need to develop leadership skills to respond to new models for the practice of vascular surgery. Those trends include:

  • A projected significant shortage of vascular surgeons by 2020
  • The trend to more women entering medical schools
  • A shift in personal values of both female and male medical students toward career choices that allow active participation in family and community life
  • The development of heart and vascular centers that rely on multidisciplinary models of patient care
