SVS Must Be "At the Table" for Health Care Reform

September 2009

Dear Colleague:

At a time when a concerted effort is taking place in Washington to reshape our health care system, I am writing to ask that you commit to making certain that the voice of the Vascular Surgeon - your voice - is heard in the debate. The future of our specialty depends upon our ability to reach United States Senators and Representatives who are making decisions about our practices. Gaining access to these members of Congress is best accomplished by donating to our SVS PAC. We’ve initiated an automatic donation method that will make it easier for you to contribute. Here’s why we need your help...

By making contributions to fundraising events, our SVS representatives have the unique opportunity for one-on-one dialogue with Senators and Representatives. I have attended several fundraisers and in each case have been personally introduced to the Senator or Representative and have had ample opportunity to have a discussion with them on issues that are critical to us and our specialty.

While we as a specialty are small in number, I can assure you that our efforts over the past four years have resulted in a great deal of credibility and trust for SVS. Now is the time to add to our past successes by committing ourselves to a spirited and focused “full court press” to have our issues heard. I realize the difficulty in requesting funds for our SVS PAC in this environment but there will never be a more important opportunity to have an impact upon the future of vascular surgery. After decisions are made, the door to change will be difficult to re-open. The drubbing vascular surgery took by not being part of the RBRVS debate years ago has taken most of an entire professional generation to rectify. We do not want a repeat of that scenario.

In an effort to make your donation as painless as possible, we have created a new method of giving to the SVS PAC. In addition to the lump-sum annual contribution, the SVS PAC will accept contributions for as little as $25 per month for a maximum of 24 months from either a credit card or bank debit card. Please review the contribution form and donate a sum comfortable for you.

Rest assured that the members of the SVS PAC Committee are making every effort to get our voices heard. Your contribution will make sure that happens - its “Your Voice for Your Future.”

Sincerely,

Carlo A. Dall’Olmo, MD on behalf of the SVS PAC Committee
