SVS Endorses Position Statement on Comparative Effectiveness
CHICAGO (July 09, 2009) —
The Society for Vascular Surgery® (SVS) Board of Directors endorsed a position statement on comparative effectiveness on June 10, 2009. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 allotted $1.1 billion to fund comparative effectiveness research over a wide array of medical conditions. The SVS position statement endorses these concepts and offers specific suggestions about what vascular topics warrant the highest priority.
“As the nation struggles with the rising costs of health care, vascular surgeons have taken an important step toward giving policy-makers the tools they need to help improve the vascular health of Americans, without undue costs,” said Anton Sidawy, MD, SVS president.
Comparative effectiveness research differs from traditional clinical research in that it compares the effectiveness of two or more treatments for a clinical condition. Results of this research allow physicians, patients, and policy-makers to assess what treatment will be most effective in a given situation. SVS will use this statement in its advocacy efforts as a way to participate in national policy making.
The position statement was published in the June 2009 issue of the
Journal of Vascular Surgery and is available on
VascularWeb.
“The Committee on Comparative Effectiveness, chaired by Michael Stoner, MD, has written a comprehensive statement,” said Sidawy. “Our society can be truly proud of the role we are playing in assuring that vascular disease management is both effective and affordable.”
