Dr. K. Wayne Johnston was presented the Society for Vascular Surgery® (SVS) Lifetime Achievement Award during the Vascular Annual Meeting® on June 12, 2009. As a leader in vascular surgery in the U.S. and Canada, Dr. Johnston is noted for his contributions advancing academic vascular surgery, education, and training. This award is the highest honor bestowed by SVS on one of its members. It recognizes an individual’s outstanding and sustained contributions to the profession and SVS, and honors exemplary professional practice and leadership.
Dr. Johnston’s accomplishments include the R. Fraser Elliott Chair in Vascular Surgery at the University of Toronto; the Lister Prize for Surgical Research; and co-founding member of the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery and its President in 1998. He was deeply involved with the precursors of the current SVS. Dr. Johnston played an active role in committees of the International Cardiovascular Society and the SVS and was actively involved in the negotiations to merge the two societies. He was section editor for the SVS Web site, VascularWeb.org, between 2003 and 2006, and was the founding editor of Vascular Specialist, the official SVS newspaper. In 2005 he became vice president of the SVS and then served as SVS president between 2007 and 2008.
Dr. Johnston was editor-in-chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery® and has served on the editorial board of several other professional journals. He has served as the associate editor of the four recent editions of Rutherford’s Textbook of Vascular Surgery and is currently the co-editor of the latest edition.
In the realm of vascular education, he was instrumental in setting initial standards for training in vascular surgery in Canada. He personally supervised 38 Masters and PhD students, and his research has been continuously funded by the Canadian Institute for Health Research for more than 30 years. He was the co-founder and main data analyst for the landmark Canadian aneurysm study, which has had a profound impact on the practice of aneurysm surgery around the world, and has at least 318 peer-reviewed manuscripts.
