SVS Offers Baby Boomers Vascular Health Social Media Resources

CHICAGO (August 12, 2009) —

Vascular disease primarily affects seniors, and as the United States population rates for seniors increases with aging baby boomers, the potential for vascular disease increases. In 2005, the United States Census Bureau reported there were more than 67 million people aged 55 and older. The Bureau estimated 7,918 people turned 60 each day in 2006, an estimated 330 people every hour. They anticipate there will be more than 87 million baby boomers in 2015 and by 2030 there will be 57.8 million baby boomers living, primary between the ages of 66 and 84. With this increase in potential vascular disease cases, knowledge of all conditions and treatments will become even more critical to baby boomers and their families.

Baby boomers now have access to the most comprehensive vascular health information though social media and on-line resources. The Society for Vascular Surgery® (SVS) provides detailed vascular health information from the country’s leading vascular surgeons.

Vascular disease topics include podcast videos on:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) - It is estimated that 200,000 individuals in the U.S. have an AAA, many of whom are totally unaware of it. At greatest risk are men more than 60 years of age with a history of smoking.
  • Carotid Arterial Disease - In the U.S. more than 750,000 individuals have a stroke each year. There are more new strokes than cancers of the breast, prostate and colon combined.  Although there are multiple causes of stroke, disease of the carotid artery is responsible for 40 percent of all strokes.
  • Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)-  PAD affects more than eight million people in the U.S., especially those over 50, and by age 65 about 12 to 20 percent of the population has the disease. Diagnosis is critical, as people with PAD have a four-to-five times higher risk of heart attack or stroke.
  • Other topics include Deep Vein Thrombosis, Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms, and Penetrating Ulcers of the Aorta.
Podcast videos on vascular disease treatments include: Medical Management of Vascular Disease, Minimally Invasive Vascular Procedures and Vascular Surgery, Non-invasive Vascular Diagnosis, The Complete Vascular Specialist, Endovascular Aneurysm Treatment, and Who Should be Referred to a Vascular Surgeon.
